Am I Blessed To Have Saved My Job?

Honestly speaking, yes, I feel lucky to have saved my job despite seeing my peers being laid off. Results of current recession are well evident in surroundings; companies facing loss of wealth and employees facing loss of their livelihoods.

In my view, to a large extent it's the economic downturn that's driving people out of the employments. However, that's not all that accounts for these current layoffs. Being an Indian I.T. professional, I am witnessing few organizations still registering growth but these companies are deliberately cutting jobs and saving costs in the name of global recession. The recession has given them a tool to say, goodbye, to employees who the company wasn't able to get rid of, otherwise.

Another thing that I saw duing the I.T. boom in India was that the people were bagging handsome jobs just because of ample availability of I.T. jobs, thanks to globalization and outsourcing. Many of these jobs were being offered based more on employers' immediate needs and less on the competence of employees. Thousands of I.T. grads were getting good jobs although I doubt, all of them were actually as worthwhile as that.

Now that the companies are facing scarcity of wealth, people are learning that a big apartment, a nice car, and a handsome salary, required something more than their mere presence. A stroke of luck can be longer than typical duration of stroke but it can't be a lifetime, just in case you thought of salvation being an average performer. what say?

During the IT boom in India, Companies hired IT professionals for there benefits, as they were extracting more money from the clients by showing the number of head counts, which was wrong. Also in this process they were few intakes that even were not eligible for that job.

It's not only in IT any other profession whether it's financial, politics, every field have people that are not suitable for that position.

What i think, this recession is proved good for some of the hard working and well deserving people. Those shouldn't be in that place where they don't deserve to. Across the board, only those people are fired that were not performing well, or there intake salary was pretty high or those managers that just sits idle grabbing huge salaries.

In negative aspect, due to this recession and firing policies of the companies, employees have started working hard and companies are getting more out of them. If we closely look, companies are making profit from this recession, as they are getting more work out of the limited number of people that they have now.

Well, you shouldn't feel yourself as lucky person. You must have deserve that place :)

Well, thanks for the well-thought comment. I still call myself lucky because not only the lack of skills, but also organizational politics played a major role in people being laid off. I call myself lucky because I didn't fall in any political game and just didn't become the part of mass that lost their jobs. And the bitter fact remains that not only the undeserving but some of deserving people too lost their jobs in this recession. :)
